How many people agree with PETA on this?
I’m sure everyone knows that Michael Vick abused pit bulls and forced them to fight. I am totally against dog fighting, and it breaks my heart to read about the conditions these poor animals were forced to endure.
Best Friends Animal Sanctuary has taken 22 of Vick’s most "hopeless" dogs to attempt to rehabilitate them. The workers at Best Friends are doing their best to love on these abused dogs, and most of them are showing signs of improvement. Although some may never be able to be adopted, the dogs are getting second chances.
PETA believes that the most humane choice would be to euthanize Vick’s (and all) fighting dogs, because confinement is cruel. This blows my mind! It’s not like the dogs are being kept in cages and ignored. They’re being walked and trained and loved. I think it is such short-sighted thinking on PETA’s part.
If a 7 year old child was rescued from being abused, would PETA propose the child is killed??
What do you guys think?

Wow lots of great answers! I don’t know how I’ll choose a Best Answer!
I liked what the first answer said, until I got to the second half of the sentence. Yes, let’s euthanize Michael Vick! ;0)
Linda, I am an animal lover through and through (I love animals so much, I’m a vegan!), but I will never say animals are better or even equivalent to humans in general. Is my dog better than that guy who killed 6 members of his family in Tennessee (off topic I know)? Hell yes he is!!
I love animals but I hate PETA

I say euthanize Vick, and then his little dogs, too. Seriously.

PETA are totally insane on the issue of domesticated animals.
Google "Peta kills puppies" and you’ll be totally stunned.
They’ve take puppies and kittens from people and shelters, promising to try to place them, and immediately euthanized them and tossed them into dumpsters. They claim it’s better for them to be dead than to live in captivity.
They’re sick.

What I don’t understand is why people seem to put more value on animal lives instead of human life.

I hate PETA and I don’t agree with anything they say. HOWEVER- I think that there are far better candidates for rehabilitation and rehoming than former fighting dogs.
Best Friends is an awesome establishment with a lot of money and a lot of land. But I do think they are wasting their time with this one- however, I can’t fault them for their huge hearts and compassion.

I don’t agree with anything PETA does or advocates. PETA kills more animals than they save. Bunch of hypocrites.

I don’t agree with anything PETA says in first place and this is a very touchy topic seeing how I have a "pit bull".
There are several Vick pits that are out for adoption now and they are doing wonderful.
I am not going to even get into this topic too much because I have done it already and it just makes me upset but I’m just gonna say that I do not agree with PETAs option and they shouldn’t be euthanized.
More and more it becomes clear to me why PETA is such a joke!
I don’t understand how anyone could support them.
EDIT : @Linda. I could tell you many many reasons why. also, If you can’t say anything good, don’t say anything at all. Your input clearly wasn’t needed!

Children are usually not compared to animals. However, I understand what you are saying.
I don’t think I understand PETA’s decision too much.

yah i now what you mean PETA once took dogs from a shelter so they wouldn’t be killed only to realize they couldn’t afford to keep them and feed them so they killed them and dumped them in a dumpster. I don’t care for PETA they are delusional people who often chose the wrong way to deal with things.
References :
I don’t agree with it, but that what happens to a lot of fighting dogs. They are too aggressive to be adopted to families and there is no room in the shelter to keep them. The shelters can’t afford the months and months or rehabilitation they need. there are shelters for rehabilitation, but there are only so many dogs they can’t take all of them.

PETA is an extremist bunch of kooks. They rarely make sense.

Nobody needs to agree with this, while I am delighted that these dogs have a chance at life, PETA’s point that the money could be much better spent helping a lot more viable animals, capable of being adopted, is quite true.
The sad thing is that these dogs got into the fix they are in because some vicious moron decided dog fighting is fun. That’s what we need to get excited about and stop for all time – not who agrees with what about the poor victims of the perverts games.
There is more than enough room – and all too much need – for ALL animal rescue organizations.
If you don’t agree with one, join another, but do become an activist for animal rights and welfare.

PETA promotes the banning of all domestic animals. If you read the fine print on their website it says so quite clearly. PETA is also against medical testing on animals HOWEVER the ‘higher ups’ use medicines that were gained by animal testing. So in short, PETA is an organization with ulterior motives practicing borderline tactics to get their way. Recently, a bill was proposed to change PETA’s organization into a slaughter house which would be regulated by the FDA because of their actions.

only people in PETA… a.k.a. crazy nutjobs… not saying I support cruelty to animals I’m just sayin’ PETA is a freakshow of animal "lovers" who think that better a person hurt that an animal… PETA= too obsesive… oh and they hate fishing… evil b******s

Have to agree-PETA is an extremist organization who has a hidden agenda. Im not sure what it is, but there are several examples of hypocrisy that I have noticed coming from PETA.

?
its crewl too put down the dogs ,but in a way i can see there point, if they were givin to new homes all they have been taught too do is fight so what if they cause harm to other dogs or people

No they shouldn’t euthanize the dogs. It’s as bad as the death penalty, but worse because the dogs didn’t do anything. It’s definitely wrong what Vick did but I think we should stop concentrating on him so much ,and move past punishment to prevention. We all know he’s not the only one and this sort of thing goes on every day.
And actually Linda brings up a good point. Yeah it’s really horrible what people do to animals, but think of all the people that are killed everyday. I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion and should be able to say what they want without others telling them to keep their mouths quiet.

It surprises me that PETA is advocating destroying any animal since they tend to be insane about letting all animals live. Although they also don’t think a dog should ever be leashed (I guess getting hit by a car is better in the mind of PETA).
That being said, I probably would have said to euthanize them before reading the article you linked to. If this sanctuary has the resources and expertise to rehab these dogs and is willing to keep them for the rest of their lives, more power to them. I don’t think they should ever be adopted out though.

PETA is idiotic, always has been. They would prefer if there were no animals as pets period. If they had their way not only would these dogs be put down, but all your family pets too.

i have talked about this issue many of times i am a huge animal person love them and think peta is one of the worse organizations in the united states i have many articles about peta putting to sleep (killing) way more animals then they save. in 2007 alone they put to sleep (killed) nearly 3000 animals and only saved and found homes for 12. people should really do thier research about peta before backing them up all they are is a modern day slaughter house. by the way pitbulls are very lovable dogs if u raise them right just like anything else please dont vote on the ban for pitbulls bill.

I do not agree with PETA at all they should do all they can to help these poor dogs. Even though they may be aggressive at first they may turn out to be loving family dogs.

Peta does not believe in domesticating animals.. they believe that all domestic animals should be either released back into the wild, or if they are too domesticated to transition back.. to be euthanized.. I understand SOME of what they believe.. for example their stance on dogs that are chained up outside 24/7 .. but the idea of euthanizing pets just because they are not back in the wild is over the top.

I think that PETA is run by a group of whack jobs and I would never agree with anything they propose.

It’s a difficult decision but would you be willing to adopt one of these dogs, know their history? That’s why PETA is looking into euthanasia. I agree with another, euthanize Vick!

PETA has some good points on other topics… but they go insane. I mean… if we don’t have domesticated animals under our care [dogs, cows, etc], how will they survive in the wild?
I highly doubt a flock of chickens will last any more than a day out in the Savannah.
Put Vick on a 50++ year sentence, and keep the dogs alive. I think only the ones that have been seriously scarred from the fights should be humanely euthanized. There’s nothing wrong with giving the dogs second chances.

It is very noble of Best Friends Sanctuary to try and rehabilitate these fighting dogs, but I do have to agree with PETA on this one – they are fighting a losing battle, and wasting a lot of money on it. These dogs will NEVER be suitable pets. Not because they are pit bulls (I love pits), but because they were fought. Any dog that was put into a ring and fought with another dog will never be a safe member of society, I’m sorry but it’s true.
Of course no dog is 100% bomb-proof, any dog can flip out one day and bite someone, but a dog that has been pitted against another dog has had its prey-drive honed and sharpened until it is an instant reaction. They can’t stop it, because they don’t even think about it – they see another dog bristle up, a cat running across the yard, a child coming up at them out of their peripheral – and something in their brain just snaps and they think, "It’s game time." Before you can blink they are biting into flesh, doing what their former owners trained them to do. It isn’t their fault, but it is a kind of mental abuse that can’t be undone.

PETA is an insane group of extreme hypocrites. However I think there are far better candidates for being rehabilitated and adopted than former fighting dogs. I love dogs but your question about the child is just ridiculous, I dont know how anyone can compare a mistreated animal to a human.
