Who are the EMTs
You’ll find them at Denny’s. At least I always do. Denny’s, Coco’s, Perkin’s; any all-night restaurant, always between the hours of three in the morning and sunrise. Too tired to work, too wound up to go home and sleep just yet, so they head into an all-night joint and order coffee and talk. They’ll talk to anybody. They just got off a sixteen-hour shift and their head is full of stories. They have to tell them to you so they can put the scenes behind them. The scenes are funny and scary at the same time, the things they’ve just witnessed, and they flash through a range of emotion until they are purged. Then they can stumble home and go to sleep. You, on the other hand, will stay up a couple of hours later.
Somewhere in the realm of society, located just between the sensibility of the normal and the pandemonium of the perverse, there is a group of people whose training and actions often make the difference between life and death, and whose nerves are the violin strings on which the streets play their drama. They are the Emergency Medical Technicians. You should listen to their stories. They end up with more wisdom than they know what to do with.
Outside of the all-night restaurant, you will find them located in various positions in your cities, readied to respond to the next possible disaster which could occur. May be a car accident; may be a heart attack. Readied to respond to a school shooting or a downed plane, they’ll be hindered only by the natural obstacles of daily traffic.
No other group of humanity can carry so many items in their pockets which are strategically located in optimal positions of the body. There’s scissors, band aids, tape, chap stick, combs or essential lifesaving and sustaining items. But not much money. No expensive watches. If they did it for the money, they would do something else.
With an overwhelming desire and a keen instinct to sustain the flame of life from the last flicker of a spark which is near spent, this special group of individuals cope with variables which few people could ever tolerate. EMTs do not panic. They wouldn’t dare. When things go right, the public loves them, the newspapers ignore them and the many lives that have been lost fighting to save a stranger may rate an article on page twelve or so. But if they were in it for the fame, they would be doing something else.
Then the bill arrives, and the very patient they saved tells their friends and family hear how terrible the 500.00 bill was, instead of the efforts that saved their life or a family member’s. As Emergency Medical Technicians does not generally receive tax dollars such as police and fire agencies. Not in the United States, anyway. But if they couldn’t take criticism, they wouldn’t be in this job, for when they make a mistake they will be their own harshest critic.
These men and women who make up the breed of EMTs come from all walks of life, and rarely stand on common ground with you until they meet you as a result of violence, accidents, and medical emergencies on the streets. Housing developments and office buildings all blur together in their eyes; it’s just one big street. Then when you meet one, all seems to come together with you in need of their training, their lifesaving skills and their emotional support.
You are having the most panicked ten minutes of your life, and they are having their tenth call on just another day. EMT personnel lean on each other for support and understanding in sharing horrible calls that creates a flurry of emotions. Sometimes they hang out in pairs in the coffee shop, but even in packs they’ll still talk to you. They find talking to anybody who isn’t bleeding or screaming to be quite relaxing.
They are the people who crawl into a twisted steel cage which once was a car, to search for signs of life amongst its occupants and treat them while fuel leaks endanger their own lives. They ask what hurts and can you move They are the calm voice on the other end of the telephone when it seems as though your world is crashing around you and your family.
They are the individuals who are the last to win the respect of the public. Despite their advanced medical training and certification they are called “ambulance drivers”. They are the first to be brought to court for decisions and actions that were made on the spur of the moment in environments of absolute chaos. It was dark, sirens were everywhere, somebody was screaming, somebody was bleeding and had bone sticking out, there was a gun, the police officer lost it and screamed at them because he was scared senseless. But in the end they’re cleared after thousands of dollars of defense money when their decisions are backed up as appropriate.
They are individuals who carry no weapons and are attacked frequently, yelled at and spat on. People who are drugged or just crazy to start with. Suicide attempts fighting for their right to die. Meth addicts who fight with the strength of a mammoth. Drunks looking to show their macho off, even after the beer bottle cut their scalp. The homeless schizophrenic who thinks the mafia is after him.
They have to be brave. They have to be strong. They have to be smart and decisive. Even when they are relaxed, a hundred learned reflexes are waiting under the surface, ready to spring into a Heimlich maneuver if you choke on that next bite of steak or the CPR cycle should you suddenly clutch your chest.
But most of all, they have to relate. To each other or to anybody, they have things they’ve seen that they have to tell just so they don’t feel so crazy with it bottled in their head. But then, they took this job because… well, no one can explain why anyone would want this job. But they took it partly because they’re not afraid to live out loud.

The Story of the Ultimate Fighting Championship
You may have heard of it before – the octagon. It’s the place where warriors meet to battle each other into submission by knocking the opponent unconscious or forcing him to give up by imposing explosive pain on his body. It is the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
The UFC is a mixed-martial arts organization that pits 2 opponents against each other, each using different styles of fighting. It was created to answer that age-old question: who is the better fighter, the boxer or the wrestler? It started as a sideshow and has since turned into a multi-million dollar sanctioned organization that grows in popularity year after year.
UFC – The Beginning
In the beginning it was just a tournament, the brainchild of Art Davie, a creative advertising executive who witnessed the energy-bursting excitement while watching a mixed-martial arts (or MMA) fight. He thought it had all the right ingredients that people find in hockey, boxing or karate. MMA, he thought, was the next level, a mixture of everything. He brought on board a Brazilian legend in MMA technique training, Rorion Gracie and a screenwriter, John Milius, who became the creative director. They brought in 27 investors and the Ultimate Fighting Championship was born.
Still in it infancy, the UFC had limited rules: no biting and no eye gouging. The result was mayhem. 400lb fighters fought 100lb fighters. Blood sprayed the octagon red like no other event had ever dared to allow. It did not go over well with the mainstream and the UFC quickly became an underground fighting spectacle. Some advocated against the existence of such extreme barbarism, including Senator John McCain of Arizona. It was a downward spiral that ended with the UFC being dropped by cable distributors and individual cable providers. The audience was reduced to almost nothing and the UFC itself was forced to submit.
UFC – The Comeback
The UFC was on the verge of its demise with no rules, no audience, no cable access and U.S. Senators calling for its break-up. It was time to step back and re-evaluate the situation. People are interested in the idea of MMA, but not in seeing the type of fight that has 2 fighters fighting in pools of their own blood. The first step was to add protective rules. Weight classes were introduced – heavy weights, middleweights and lightweights. The number of unacceptable striking areas on the body were increased to include the back of the neck, pressure points areas and the back of the head. Protective gloves were mandatory and there were now 5-minute rounds, all of which helped the UFC legitimately begin calling itself a sport, rather than an underground cage fight.
After the organization cleaned up the fights, it was time to start getting officially recognized by fighting associations. The improved image played well with the athletic commissions, as did the petitions for sanctioning made by other clean MMA organizations. It wasn’t until September 30th of 2000 that the International Fighting Championships hosted the first MMA sanctioned event in New Jersey. 2 months later it was the UFC’s turn. Their first sanctioned event also took place in New Jersey under the State Athletic Control Board’s Unified Rules. The Ultimate Fighting Championships had lost legal battles and suffered financially, but now it was a legitimate sport.
The time seemed right for new leadership. Two casino executives and a boxing promoter placed and won a bid to buy the UFC for $2 million in 2001. That same year, the organization successfully secured the sanctioning of the Nevada State Athletic Commission and returned to Pay-per-view. Slowly but surely, popularity was growing. It gained a spot on Fox Sports Net, which aired it as the first American mixed martial arts match in 2002.
Today.
Thanks to better promoting, bigger ticket events and the necessary funding, the UFC aired its own reality TV show on Spike TV called The Ultimate Fighter. It was slotted just after a large wrestling event and the UFC show quickly rose to the top for the station. Spike TV then began airing promotional half-hour teaser shows to promote UFC pay-per-view events. All of the widespread attention exploded its popularity. In 2006, the massively hyped event UFC 61 earned near 775,000 pay-per-view buys, the second highest in US history. The UFC, it seems, has officially arrived.
So what’s next for the growing organization? They’re thinking about expanding internationally. First stop: Mexico.

Robbie Lawler Faces Off Against Babalu Sobral to Headline Strikeforce Live
By Alexia Krause
With Strikeforce Live only weeks away, the heat is getting turned up for a showdown between two hard-hitting opponents. “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler will take on former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral for a fight that is bound to go beyond the octagon and strike at the hearts of the two fighters. In fact, Sobral was quoted as saying that he has “hate in his heart leading up to the fight and his trainer is making it clear that his hate will be taken out in the ring against Lawler. This type of bad blood will make the upcoming Strikeforce Live a MMA event to remember. The two will face each off in a 195-pound catch-weight bout on June 16 in Los Angeles.
This is an interesting turn of events, as Sobral wasn’t initially slated to fight against Lawler. The main card had originally been Mike “Mayhem” Miller vs. “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler, but after being rebuked by Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, Mayhem was later pulled from the card. Miller is under review for a possible suspension due to the brawl that had broken out following a post-fight interview with Jake Shields at Strikeforce Nashville.
The next Strikeforce event (Wednesday June 16th in Los Angeles) will be the first ever to be scheduled during the middle of the week (in order to correspond with the video game expo, E3, and the subsequent release of EA Sports MMA). Most fans are going to the event to see the main fight between Sobral and Lawler. The main card is bound to set the tone for the evening and possibly the rest of Strikeforce MMA.
“Ruthless” Robbie Lawler is considered by most to be somewhat of a quiet figure outside of the ring, but once inside the octagon he’s as merciless as his nickname. Lawler is known for completely annihilating his opponents by means of his all-or-nothing fighting style. This type of intensity will be a large part of his upcoming fight. This 5-foot-11 middleweight may be a reckless fighter inside the cage, but his fans love him for exactly that reason.
Renato “Babalu” Sobral, on the other hand, is a complete technician within the squared circle. Widely known for his amazing grappling and submission moves, Babalu doesn’t need to be ruthless in order to dominate. This type of process has helped Sobral rack up victories over such fighters as Kiyoshi Tamura, Mauricio Rua, and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou on his way to becoming the light heavyweight champion. It has also made him one of the hardest fighters to defeat in all of Strikeforce MMA.
Many fans seem to think that if Lawler can keep the fight on his feet, he will have the advantage. Robbie Lawler has a history of being smart on his feet, throwing calculated punches. However, if the fight shifts towards more grappling, and Babalu is careful, he could use his superior BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) skills to his advantage. Over half of Sobral’s wins have stemmed from his masterful use of submission fighting.
Other matches for the evening feature Marius Zaromskis vs. Evangelista Cyborg and Trevor Prangley vs. Tim Kennedy. Both fights are bound to have their fair share of attention at the event, but nothing will compare to when ruthlessness meets technical dominance via Lawler/Sobral. Then we shall see exactly how much hate is flowing through the veins of these two fighters at Strikeforce Live on the 16th.

Cage The Elephant – Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked(lyrics)
Cage The Elephant – Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked lyrics:
I was walking down the street,
When out the corner of my eye
I saw a pretty little thing approaching me.
She said “I’ve never seen a man
Who looks so all alone,
Could you use a little company?
If you can pay the right price
Your evening will be nice,
And you can go and send me on my way.”
I said “You’re such a sweet young thing
Why you do this to yourself?”
She looked at me and this is what she said:
“Oh, there ain’t no rest for the wicked,
Money don’t grow on trees.
I got bills to pay,
I got mouths to feed,
There ain’t nothing in this world for free.
I know I can’t slow down,
I can’t hold back,
Though you know, I wish I could.
No there ain’t no rest for the wicked,
Until we close our eyes for good”.
Not even fifteen minutes later
I’m still walking down the street,
When I saw a shadow of a man creep out of sight.
And then he sweeps up from behind
And puts a gun up to my head,
He made it clear he wasn’t looking for a fight.
He said “Give me all you’ve got
I want your money not your life,
But if you try to make a move I won’t think twice.”
I go like “You can have my cash
But first you know I got to ask
What made you want to live this kind of life?”
He said “There ain’t no rest for the wicked,
Money don’t grow on trees.
I got bills to pay,
I got mouths to feed,
There ain’t nothing in this world for free.
I know I can’t slow down,
I can’t hold back,
Though you know, I wish I could.
No there ain’t no rest for the wicked,
Until we close our eyes for good”.
Now a couple hours have passed
And I was sitting at my house,
The day was winding down and coming to an end.
So I turned on the TV
And flipped it over to the news,
And what I saw I almost couldn’t comprehend.
I saw a preacher man in cuffs he’d taken money from the church,
He stuffed his bank account with righteous dollar bills.
But even still I can’t say much
Because I know we’re all the same,
oh yes we all seek out to satisfy those thrills
“Oh, there ain’t no rest for the wicked,
Money don’t grow on trees.
We got bills to pay,
We got mouths to feed,
There ain’t nothing in this world for free.
I know we can’t slow down,
We can’t hold back,
Though you know, we wish we could.
No there ain’t no rest for the wicked,
Until we close our eyes for good”

(BBT Round 2) Another Soul vs. Kaai19999
Namine slowly absorbs Soras soul, and as his soul is completely, absorbed, she feels Kairi calling his name. Namine ignores this because she can feel a hunger over taking her; a hunger for more souls to absorb. Using her power, she draws Riku to her and captures him. The people where she lives begin to fear her and set fire to her home, but she walks out unscathed, using the reminder of Riku’s lifeforce to get out. A villager, Snow, prepares to fight her.Realizing she can brand people, she brands Snow so she can slowly take his soul.
Fast forward about six years, and Snow is still alive. Namine keeps him in a cage as her first branded, a prize, even though he couldnt escape even if he tried. Namine, whos grown up, taunts him.
“You hear for the money?” Namine asks as someone approaches.
“I am.” The girl replies. Snow starts and looks up, surprised. This girl…is the first normal person he’s seen in six years and he thinks he recognizes her. ‘Kairi’ he thinks, but he doesn’t have the strength to do anything.
“Here you go.” Namine holds up the money and hands it over, not recognizing Kairi.
So…I decided that since I was in the same BBT and the last video could have a continued storyline…I thought I’d do that. And I loved how some of this video came together, especially with Snow.

Do mixed Martial Arts competitions really compare to Cockfighting from an ethical point of view?
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/pressass/20070905/tuk-doctors-urge-human-cockfights-ban-6323e80_2.html
I read this today, and I think the comparrison between animals thrown into a pit/cage with no choice but to fight is far from the reality of people training with the purpose and intent to fight.
So from an ethical point of view is Cockfight really an accurate comparison to Mixed Martial Arts bouts, or just a shock tactic aimed at disgusting people to gain public support?
Unless the humans in the fight are being forced to do it, then there is no comparison.
