Nick Diaz: MMA’s Most Frustrating Fighter
by Ross Everett
Had things happened differently, Nick Diaz would forever be part of MMA history. Regardless of how his career transpired after February, 2007 he should have been remembered as part of one of the greatest fights ever. His PRIDE 33 matchup against Takanori Gomi should have created an indelible legacy. It was a Mixed Martial Arts version of Gatti/Ward or Castillo/Corrales 1. It should have been the biggest victory of Diaz’s career and the centerpiece of his highlight reel.
Unfortunately, Diaz’s moment of glory lasted only about six weeks. On April 10th, the Nevada Athletic Commission announced that hed failed a drug test. Diaz had tested positive for marijuana, and his THC level was off the charts. The Nevada Athletic Commission considers a THC level over 50 a positive result for marijuana usage. Nick Diazs THC level was an astounding 175 and that led NSAC Chairman Dr. Tony Alamo to speculate that in this situation marijuana was a performance enhancing drug. The rationale was that during the fight Diaz was feeling no pain”literally. Diaz was fined, suspended and the result of his almost certain fight of the year winner with Gomi changed to a no decision.
Diaz had singlehandedly removed the luster from a classic bout. Following an action packed and very close first round Gomi took control in the second. Gomi had opened a cut on Diazs face and it was bleeding a gusher. On several occasions Gomi implored the referee to stop the fight, or at least check on the cut due to the excessive blood flow. With the ref showing no signs of stopping the fight and Diaz hanging tough, Gomi took the fight to the ground and in a matter of seconds found himself forced to tap out to a gogoplata.
While Diaz might not be a bad person, hes definitely someone who attracts trouble. While the relative risk pot smoking is debatable and beyond the purview of this article one thing is certain”fighters are prohibited from its use. Sadly, it appears that Diaz places a greater value on his recreational drug use than his legacy as a professional prizefighter. Hes gone so far as to obtain a prescription for medical marijuana in California.
Ironically, Japans notoriously lax oversight of mixed martial arts makes it a perfect fit for Diaz. He doesnt have to worry about drug tests or athletic commissions who arent sympathetic to his claiming a need for medical marijuana. His workrate, conditioning and versatility as a fighter will be appreciated by the Japanese fans, and offers countless matchup opportunities for the Japanese promotions. Most significantly, perhaps, his participation with Japanese promotions DREAM or Sengoku provides Diaz the opportunity to put his missteps behind him and reassert himself as one of the sports most exciting fighters and not one of its biggest troublemakers.

Rodeo Extreme
UFC, MMA, Pride, and all those fighting companies make another addition to the world of extreme sports. Another chapter in the extreme sports world book is a rodeo. Garth Brooks portrayed the life well. The Texas rodeo is no exception to the rule of extreme (also known as Rodeo Houston). It was the experience of a lifetime and I enjoyed it. RodeoHouston tickets tickets were a reasonable price. There are no bad seats in the house. It won’t matter where you sit you will have a great view and a better experience than what you paid for. The ticket people are friendly and are a welcome contrast to the harshness of life. The arena is so large that it could be easy to get lost but with the helpful people working there and the easy to read signs it is doubtful that you will. The concession stand where I bought my food and cold drinks was clean, well maintained and easy accessible. The food itself was great, well priced and had a wide variety. I got nachos (how I like them, with chili, cheese and a lot of peppers), Frito pie, barbeque hamburger, skittles, a pickle, corndog and some M&M’s. They matched a man sized hunger with man sized quantities. You bet I will be going back sometime soon.
Fighters Energy
UFC, MMA, Pride and Thunder fighters have some nice houses. The other day I was wondering what did they do to not only make it a luxury but also their houses are green and Energy saving. Their home appliancesran on a lower percentage cost then a normal house hold. That got me looking on how to reduce home energycosts. I stumble upon a site that looked promising. It was called Microsoft-hohm.com. They teach simple but effective ways of reducing energy costs. They have 5 categories to save.
The first is heating and cooling. Adjusting the temperature of your home, by 5 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit, before you go to sleep or whenever you leave your home. Replacing your central air conditioner, with an Energy Star-labeled conditioner with a SEER equal to 14, 15, 16, or 17, will save money.
The second category is appliances. Cleaning dryer lint will not only improve efficiency but take away the possibility of a house fire. If you can, stringing clothes on a line outside will improve costs. Setting your computer to go into a sleep mode when not in use will help costs. Putting your copier to a low power mode, when not in use. Use auto-dry or moisture sensor when drying clothes with your dryer.
Walls window and doors is the third. Insulation in your attic increases r-values. Checking your chalking or weather stripping, for any needs of repair, will help save. Increasing insulation to a R-19, R-30 or R38 will save.
House exterior will save also. When re-roofing use rigid sheathing insulation. When replacing siding add external sheathing beneath the siding. Energy-star roofing material with solar reflection will save in cooling costs. Insulating the perimeter slab, of your house saves energy costs.
The 5th but still important is lighting. Instead of incandescence bulbs use a more efficient bulb. When leavening the house or a room make sure to cut out the lights to save energy.
Those 5 sets of things reduced my energy cost and those of the elite MMA fighters by a big percentage. They can save you money also.
