Breaking News! Mark Coleman drops out of UFC 87 bout with Lesnar.?

The following is from sherdog.com:

Former UFC champion Mark Coleman has withdrawn from a heavyweight tilt with upstart Brock Lesnar scheduled for UFC 87: Seek and Destroy on August 9 at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minn., due to a knee injury, UFC.com announced on Thursday.
Coleman, 43, confirmed that he tore his MCL in training and will be sidelined for six weeks. The injury will not require surgery. The replacement bout will be George St. Pierre vs. John Fitch for the UFC Welterweight championship.

What are your thoughts on this?

The GSP vs Fitch will be a better main card event. They haven’t removed the Lesnar fight; they are just not sure who should fight Lesnar. I would like to see them put him up against Herring, Hardonk or Kongo. All three would be a great match-up with Lesnar. I am kind of glad Coleman is out. He is known a little more with those fans who have watched MMA for awhile. While he has had great success in Japan… the new/average fan knows nothing about him. I think they should give him a match-up to get him reacquainted with fans. Then, maybe a match-up with Lesnar would be best plus pull in more fans.

The Ultimate Fighter

The art of brutality in its purest, rawest form. That is what UFC offers, or at least it did at one time. Gone are the days of the blood-lust, the modern UFC looks more like a ballet. In its primitive beginnings UFC was the anything goes, bare knuckle blood fest that pulled from underground foreign fighting circuits and targeted the violence nurtured American populace. It was for people who liked to watch men destroy each other, plain and simple. Now, UFC has adapted itself to the mainstream. Instead “Oh, my god, how much more can he take?” commentators are more likely to be heard saying “My god, the ref called that on in a hurry.” What prompted this radical change in style?

When The Ultimate Fighter started on UFC, the producers knew some changes had to be made. Even under the protections of late night cable, a weekly UFC was not going to get away with the dangers of the no holds barred style. What if, for example, someone was seriously injured, or even killed? The adjustments were made, and thus UFC crept into the mainstream.

Once heralded as the ultimate underground fighting promotion, UFC is now regarded as the contender to take over for Boxing as the century rolls on. Pundits argue that the diverse styles that UFC attracts place their fighters above boxers in terms of intelligence and dynamics. UFC fighters can be anything from Ninja’s to street brawlers, it is hard to say, unless you are a seasoned fan, what direction a UFC fight is going to go in. Is it going to be a submission showdown? Or a knockout? This is part of the glamour of the fight.

As UFC moves further and further from its underground roots with charismatic fighters replacing the scarred warriors of past days, it seems nothing can stop it from becoming the sporting event of the future.

Who Is Next For Chuck Liddell

With only 2 losses in his last twenty Mixed Martial Arts fights; there is little doubt that Chuck Liddell is the best light heavyweight fighter in the world. Still, fans of the UFC always want to see good battles, so it’s worth looking forward to those fighters, UFC, Pride or elsewhere who might give Chuck Liddell a run for his money.

Chuck Liddell is on a seven fight winning streak, his last defeat coming at the hands of Quinton “Rampage” Jackson in November of 2003. Those seven victories were against some of the top light heavyweights of all time, including two victories over Randy “The Natural” Couture and two victories over Tito Ortiz. Other notables were submission masters Renalto “Babalu” Sobral and Jeremy Horn.

The fight against Quinton Jackson, which was held in Japan under Pride rules was probably the last time that Chuck Liddell looked remotely vulnerable. His two victories over Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz were easy and his dismantlingof Jeremy Horn shows how far Chuck has come as a fighter since the two first met in 1999. A fight which Horn won by submission in the first round.

So who might be the next fighter to give chuck a real fight. Will it be Quinton “Rampage” Jackson in their long awaited rematch. Now that Jackson is fighting in the UFC, it’s just a matter of time until we see this one. I predict the summer or fall of 2007. I think that Chuck Liddell is a much better fighter now than he was when he faced Rampage the first time. Also Quinton Jackson is not the same fighter that faced Chuck the first time, unfortunately for Rampage, his skills have not gotten better. Ever since Quinton Jackson’s first knockout loss at the hands of Wanderlei Silva he has not been the same fighter and certainly the second knockout loss to the same opponent did not help matter any. Let’s hope that Quinton has regained that edge that made him so dangerous in the first fight against Chuck.

Wanderlei Silva, the former middleweight champion in Pride would also give Chuck a very good fight. Silva is likely the most aggressive fighter in MMA. For a long time, this fight was an MMA fans biggest dream fight, but with Silva suffering back to back losses; one to Mirko Cro Cop (a heavyweight) and most recently loosing his Pride title to Dan Henderson, it looks like this fight will not happen. If it did, I would think that Chuck would eventually knock Silva out.

What about Mauricio “Shogun” Rua? For those of you who haven’t seen Shogun fight, think of a guy with Brandon Vera’s skills, Wanderlei Silva’s aggression who’s a natural 205 pounder. Shogun won the Pride middleweight tournament in 2005 defeating Ricardo Arona in the finals. By the way, Arona would be another good fight for Chuck as he also holds a victory over Wanderlei Silva. Shogun only has one victory in his last 13 fights and that is to a much larger Mark Coleman who slammed Shogun and broke his arm. You have to go back to 2003 to find another loss for Shogun and for a 25 year old fighter, that’s a long time ago.

I’ll round out my list with Mirko Cro Cop. I don’t care if Chuck goes up to heavyweight, or Mirko cuts weight to 205. This is a fight that I’ve wanted to see for a long time. These guys are both excellent strikers, I’d give the edge in technique to Cro Cop and the edge in power to Liddell. Leg kicks might be the deciding factor and Mirko Cro Cop has Chuck Liddell beaten in this area. No matter how this fight ends, you can bet that it’ll be exciting. Neither of these two guys wants to take the fight to the ground and both of them love to knock their opponents out.

So, the fights I’d like to see Chuck Liddell in are:

Chuck Liddell vs Mauricio “Shogun” Rua
Chuck Liddell vs Quinton “Rampage” Jackson
Chuck Liddell vs Wanderlei Silva
Chuck Liddell vs Mirko Cro Cop
Chuck Liddell vs Ricardo Arona

I’m 99% sure we’re at least going to see the Rampage fight and about 50% sure that we will eventually see the Cro Cop fight. Let’s hope that the others are in the cards before Chuck retires.

Kimbo Slice Knocked Out by Seth Petruzelli – Full Video

http://www.rromp.com
Kimbo Slice Knocked Out by Seth Petruzelli in 14 seconds. This was Kimbo’s first loss – and what a loss it was…

Kevin Ferguson (born on February 8, 1974), better known as Kimbo Slice, is a Miami, Florida-based street fighter turned mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter. He first appeared in several filmed underground fights which have spread primarily on the Internet. Kimbo has since left street fighting behind and is now putting his efforts towards becoming a professional mixed martial arts fighter. Rolling Stone called Slice “The King of the Web Brawlers”

Kimbo Slice began his career in unsanctioned street fights. A notable street fight was with Sean Gannon, a former Boston Police officer who trains in MMA. In a brutal fight Kimbo lost for the first time. [6] The popularity of the fight, which was distributed throughout the internet, propelled both men into the MMA spotlight.

To prepare for sanctioned MMA fights, Slice was trained by retired MMA fighter Bas Rutten. Slice made his sanctioned MMA debut against former WBO Heavyweight champion boxer Ray Mercer at Cage Fury Fighting Championships 5, in Atlantic City on June 23, 2007. The match was scheduled as a three-round exhibition utilizing all professional rules of MMA combat. Slice defeated Mercer with a guillotine choke at 1:12 into the first round.[7] In a post-fight interview, Slice stated that he would like to fight David “Tank” Abbott. Abbott, who was a spectator, stood up from his seat and accepted the call out. One of the matchmakers for CFFC asked Slice for his assurance so that an October 12 bout at Cage Fury Fighting Championships 6 between Slice and “Tank” Abbott could be organized. This event was later canceled due to a promotion dispute. On October 11, 2007, ProElite announced that they had signed Slice to a deal and that he would make his debut on the November 10, 2007 EliteXC.[8] Originally set to make his professional MMA debut against Mike Bourke, the reformed street fighter was set to face Bo Cantrell after Bourke sustained a shoulder injury.[9] Kimbo defeated Cantrell 19 seconds into the first round by submission due to strikes.

Slice will be featured on The Iron Ring, a new television series airing on BET which features MMA prospects. Slice will be a part of the selection process for the participants.[10]

On February 16, 2008, Kimbo fought Tank Abbott in the main event at EliteXC: Street Certified. He won by KO 43 seconds into the first round due to strikes. At the fight his weight was announced at an all-time low of 234lbs, a far cry from his street fighting days of 280lbs.

On May 31, 2008, Kimbo fought in the main event of the first ever Mixed Martial Arts event shown on prime time network television, EliteXC: Primetime. Though one of the judges had each fighter winning one of the first two rounds, Kimbo’s opponent James Thompson won both on total points by repeatedly taking down Slice and grounding and pounding. In the opening seconds of the third round, however, Kimbo threw a haymaker to Thompson’s left ear, which ruptured Thompson’s cauliflower. This was soon followed by three unanswered punches to a standing Thompson, which led to a referee stoppage and a controversial win for Slice. Fellow EliteXC competitor Brett Rogers was particularly critical of Slice’s victory, calling Slice’s performance “garbage” in a post fight interview.

A Kimbo Slice vs. Ken Shamrock fight was signed for October 4, 2008 to take place at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida as part of CBS’ “Saturday Night Fights”. Seth Petruzelli replaced Shamrock due to a cut to the left eye during warm ups only hours before the fight was to take place. Petruzelli defeated Slice by TKO 14 seconds into the bout.
